Eating disorders are far more complex than people might expect. There are many different ones categorized, but the most common types are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa,
and Binge Eating Disorder (Rome, Stranjord, 2016).

These are serious psychological illnesses that can be extremely detrimental to one’s mental and physical health if gone untreated. For instance, health repercussions of anorexia can range from kidney damage to osteoporosis and can even lead to death in more severe cases.

The mortality rate of people with anorexia is estimated at 0.56% each year (Sullivan, 1995). Individuals with eating disorders are known to base their self-worth on personal weight and shape. This can lead to unhealthy behaviors with food such as binging, purging, and starvation.

Eating Disorders are No Joke by far. Our country has instilled into our teens and Young Women that Skinny is Appealing thereby turning them into Eating Disorder Patients and many have died due to this myth.

Most certainly obesity is not great either within the realm of friends’ and family members one can only question how many will die before these two disorders are finally realized by the many who suffer from them due to the need of ignorance within our society.

What can be done? How can we as family members and friends help to dissipate the myths to save lives? The reality is we cannot force feed or take away food from those with eating disorders.

We can rely on Professionals to try but in many cases, they fail as well. The fact is it is entirely up to the individual with the disorder if they have the will to live or not.
